Hurricane Season Is Here
Louisiana Press
Association has been pivotal in educating Louisiana
newspapers and regional newspapers on how to prepare their
advertising departments for a disaster and/or an emergency
evacuation. As you know, many Louisiana newspapers were
impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. LPA acted
as the key contact for newspapers’ ad departments in the
southeastern and southwestern parts of the state. LPA was
the sole contact for accepting and facilitating advertising
in newspapers such as the New Orleans Times Picayune and
Lake Charles American Press, as well as many other
newspapers in Louisiana and Mississippi. Since then, LPA
has created a disaster checklist for newspapers. In the
event of a disaster, LPA compiles newspaper data such as
where a newspaper is printing and how they are distributing.
We then develop a plan on how LPA will be able to facilitate
ad placement in print and/or on-line depending on the
newspaper’s circumstance. Our industry must be prepared in
the wake of these emergencies. The newspaper medium is
critical in disseminating information, especially in the
time of a disaster.
